If you are anything like me, nothing can beat something crunchy to munch on at the end of a long day. I especially like to snack late in the evenings. When I am not eating a bowl of cereal, I usually grab some fruit, which I have around the kitchen specifically for when these snacking fits occur. I just don't feel bad about snacking late at night when it's something healthy like fruit. I stumbled across homemade apple chips a few weeks ago and immediately I knew that I had to try them. I am not usually a fan of dried fruit, but these are amazing. They are crispy and chewy and full of flavor. A free afternoon at home is the perfect time to make this snack. Plus, baking these apple will make your whole house smell wonderful.
Apple Chips
Apples (1 medium to large sized apple makes about 10 slices)
Vanilla
Cinnamon
Preheat oven to 250°.
After washing an apple, lay it on its side and cut into thin slices. The thinner the slice, the crispier the apple chip will be. If you like chewier apple chips, cut the apple into slightly thicker slices. You should be able to get about 10 slices from one apple.
Place the apple slices onto a cookie sheet. Using a spoon, drizzle a little vanilla on each apple slice. This step is optional, but I found that it adds another layer of flavor to the apple chips.
When you have topped all the slices with vanilla, sprinkle cinnamon over the top.
Bake the apple slices for 1 hour, then flip them over and bake for another hour. After the second hour, check the apples to see if they are to your liking. If you want crispier slices, continue baking in 30 minute intervals until the apples are done.
Allow to cool and enjoy!
*I chose not to core the apples because I liked the star shape that the core makes in the middle and I usually eat the core anyway. If you don't want to leave the core, make apple rings instead!
